Given the high price of housing – both owning and renting – it’s not surprising that Californians squeeze more into their homes than the national average.

On the rental side, 2.63 people lived in a unit, 21% higher than the nationwide average (2.17) and second only to Hawaii (2.64).

When it comes to home ownership, California had 2.92 people per residence, 15% about the nationwide average of 2.54. This places California third in the country, trailing only Utah (3.11) and Hawaii (2.98).
