It’s no secret that California is probably the first state that comes to mind when “housing crisis” is mentioned. What is not as well know are the number of steps California has taken in the last year to turn that perception – and reality – around.
First, California was one of five states – along with Washington, Texas, Maine, and Montana – enact major housing supply packages on 2025. Included were provisions to exempt certain projects from the rigorous environmental review process as well as allowing construction of apartment buildings near public transit centers.
Finally, San Francisco passed the “family zoning plan” which required the city to periodically examination of zoning to allow for the creation of new housing.
